  • Qatar economy minister 🇶🇦 Challenges create opportunities | Counting the Cost

On June 5, several countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt severed diplomatic ties and cut off sea and air links with Qatar, accusing it of supporting "extremism" and their regional rival, Iran. Qatar may have been isolated economically by its Gulf neighbours, but its financial markets have stabilised after an initial week of losses. The government says it has the resources to cope with the regional sanctions. And Qatar's finance minister is warning that if Qatar loses money, the countries behind the embargo will lose money, too. Credit rating agency Standard and Poor's says Qatari banks are strong enough to hold on, even if all the Gulf money - and more - is pulled out. And it's not just Qatari banks, the UAE's main lenders could also lose out fro...

These wires are to my shortwave antenna this is a short clip of them for now. This was at my parents house. The antennas were used for longwave, AM and shortwave radio reception. The short wires were for shortwave and the long wires are designed for long wave. I enjoyed receiving DX LW stations with these wire antennas a long time ago. Problem is that the wires were too long that it nulled out 13 MHz to 30 MHz signals. My interest was long wave radio DXing. I used a DX-398, 392, and S-350 DL on the shortwave bands. Todays I live in a small apartment and just have a shortwave antenna connected to a discone antenna with a huge indoor horizontal loop antenna. I miss my outdoor shortwave antennas :(

And it's not just Qatari banks, the UAE's main lenders could also lose out from a slowdown in business coming in from Qatar. Qatar's economy minister Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani talks to Al Jazeera about the Gulf crisis and its economic impact. Al Jazeera: What impact has the siege had on the day-to-day life of normal citizens here in Qatar, both Qataris and expats who are living here? Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani: When you talk about the impact, if we look at the Qatar economy, the economy is strong, resilient … All the indicators talk about Qatar's economy being the 18th-most competitive in the world, the second in microeconomic efficiency, good efficiency, so they indicate a very strong financial position for Qatar. Qatar is one of the strongest economies in the world. Looking at the diversification of the economy of Qatar, 61 percent of GDP come from non-oil and gas. Our import - our trade with the world - is 330 billion Qatari riyals. It is a diversified economy, as I mentioned, supported by the Qatar Vision 2030. All these indicators and the strength of Qatar and Qatar's economy gives us some sort of resilience and immunity to deal with such a situation. The blockade is mainly on our land border, around 14 percent of our total trade. We had a clear plan for such a situation; it happened, how are we going to deal with it … immediately within hours, we activated this plan. The alternative source is already identified, and the alternative point of entrance, either by air or by sea, was immediately diverted and we are seeing the supply chain moving very smoothly. Therefore, [although] people in Qatar are used to buying milk and chicken from Saudi Arabian producers, they are now seeing it from other countries. Al Jazeera: You managed to change that, as you mentioned, in just a few hours. Can you explain how? Aside from these impacts, has there been any other impact or has the impact of this siege been minimal? Al Thani: The impact of the siege, or the impact on the economy of Qatar was very limited. As I said, we have a clear plan and we know exactly how to deal with it. What's more, we have built a reserve, a strategic reserve, be it food or other materials, for our projects. That is why we were ready to deal with such a situation immediately, within hours. This plan has been identified. The source has been activated, an alternative source, and we started to import … you mentioned, milk, immediately from Turkey and other sources, and as you can see, the shelves were always full, never empty after the first day of the blockade. We really aren't talking about the primary need for the consumer. We are talking about maintaining the level of the lifestyle that Qataris and those who live in Qatar experience - that's where we are. Today, I'm talking to you, and I am confident, that all the supply chains, from air or by sea, are working smoothly. The goods that used to go to Jebel Ali [in the United Arab Emirates] and re-exported here to Qatar, have been diverted to Sohar and Salalah [in Oman] and by agreement with the main ship lines, we have also announced a direct shipping line from Salalah and Sohar to Hamad Port. We also have a new line which will come directly from India to Hamad Port, so even with the challenges that we are facing, we are creating opportunities for others. Al Jazeera: Aside from having one of the highest GDPs in the world, some of the biggest infrastructure projects are taking place as you're gearing up for the [football] World Cup 2022. Has the siege had an impact on these big infrastructure projects? Al Thani: All the infrastructure projects, even related to the 2022 World Cup, or related to the actual plan for the infrastructure upgrade that we are doing, metro, highways and others … all will be on schedule. There is no impact on it, and the primary materials … some are manufactured here in Qatar, like the cement and the steel and the sand … it is available here and now for Qatar. We even export this for others … immediately, as I said, we have a strategic reserve for more than a year... Watch the interview for more. It's one of the biggest media shake-ups in recent history. The Walt Disney Company is in the process of buying up the entertainment businesses of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox in a landmark $52.4bn deal. If it's approved, it'll be a union of Hollywood's heavyweights. But the wider story is about how people consume entertainment content in the digital age and what this means for the corporate landscape. "In the media world this is absolutely huge, but in the tech world, the combined entity is still far off the likes of Facebook, Google and Amazon, and I think that's actually the point. Disney and Fox are realising that with the growth that you're seeing within the tech versus media companies, the only chance they've got is by being a combined entity," says Mark Mulligan, managing director of Midia Research. Mulligan thinks the change is necessary because "all of these companies [Google, Facebook, Amazon] are going to be going right at the home turf of Disney and Fox ... What we're in at the moment is a battle between distribution and content. The saying always used to be that 'content is king' but now we're seeing the distribution, the big technology companies - that's where the power resides. So I think we need to look at the Disney-Fox deal within that context." With so many streaming services around the world, Mulligan says there's "a degree of maturity in online streaming - so there's still vast amounts of growth in this market." Interestingly, one of the things Netflix is great at is "migrating people away from mobile viewing to TV- centric viewing. The majority of people who sign up for Netflix on mobile will after a number of months mainly be watching through a TV set. So, there's a real recognition from the streaming companies of the need to get people away from the less reliable mobile networks into a home-wifi." "But there's going to be a much bigger challenge at the moment which is looking like we're going to have new regulations on net neutrality in the US", says Mulligan. "What that essentially means is that telephone companies that provide the internet access are going to be able to decide which services they want to perform well and which not ... so it might be that a telephone company in the US has launched its own video service and it decides anybody who's watching Netflix is going to get a small amount of connection - so however good your broadband connection is Netflix is always going to under perform. And that's potentially one of the most worrying developments that's facing streaming services at the moment." Also on this episode of Counting the Cost: Gas Exporting Countries Forum: Gas-producing countries like Qatar, Russia and Iran have laid out what they think is the future of their industry for the next two decades and it's looking strong. Kamal Santamaria went to the headquarters of the organisation in Qatar to catch up with Dr Mohammad Hossein Adeli, the organisation's secretary-general. Discussing the main drivers of energy and gas, Adeli says, "in the next 23 years up until 2040, you're going to have 1.7 billion people in the world, we're going to have 770 million more cars and 790 million more homes, and the people in the world are going to be more wealth, so all together, these are strong drivers of the demand of energy." Net neutrality: This week, rules protecting open internet access have been repealed by the US government. The changes could mean large corporations can pay internet service providers to prioritise their websites, and even block their competitors. Net neutrality advocates worry it could lead to censorship and increased internet access costs. Heidi Zhou Castro reports from Washington. Retail armageddon: It seems one way to survive retail armageddon is to engage in some retail therapy. Christophe Cuvillier, the CEO of European mall owner Unibail-Rodamco, has said online shopping has its limits and physical stores will never go out of fashion. He has predicted online shopping will peak at 20 percent of global retail spending from 8 to 10 percent currently. Unibail-Rodamco, which has high end malls from Paris to Helsinki, is bidding $15.7bn to buy Australia's Westfield. The deal, if approved will create the world's biggest mall operator. Greece solar: For so long Greece was about debt and economic hardship, but during that long recession, Greece underwent rapid growth in the use of solar energy. And it means the country will now meet its emissions targets under the Paris Climate Change Accord. John Psaropoulos reports from Lavrio. Amid widespread public outcry, Congress took decisive and largely unprecedented action in recent weeks to undo privacy protections enacted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2016. Last fall, the FCC had required internet service providers (ISPs), which can collect large amounts of personal information about their customers, to give consumers sufficient notice and obtain their consent before sharing any of that data with other entities. The rules also established common-sense requirements in cases of security breaches, designed to ensure timely notification to customers and the FCC. But Congress overturned those rules in just a few short days, with only the barest discussion and consideration. Using a little-known—and rarely-used—law known as the Congressional Review Act (CRA), Congress vetoed the FCC’s actions on a shortened timeline and with a simple majority vote in both chambers. Despite public outcry, President Trump signed the legislation a few days later. Importantly, by using the CRA Congress prevented the FCC from ever enacting substantially similar privacy rules in the future. While some have argued that the Federal Trade Commission can eventually fill this significant void, recent Court cases hold that there may be no cop on the beat for broadband privacy anytime soon. Join New America’s Open Technology Institute and Public Knowledge as we welcome Federal Trade Commissioner Terrell McSweeny to discuss the impact of the CRA on broadband privacy, and its broader implications for the future of the open internet.
